NUJ SUPPORTS IRISH TRADE UNION PROTEST AT CUTS

Journalists in Ireland are being urged to take part in a demonstration on Saturday against the government’s handling of the economic crisis. The protest – called by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions – starts at Parnell Square in Dublin at 2pm.

Members of the Irish Executive Council will carry the NUJ banner.

Under the slogan “There is a Better, Fairer Way” demonstrators will be supporting a ten point plan drawn up by the ICTU to deal with the crisis.

It covers issues like employment rights, pay, and potecting jobs.

Seamus Dooley, NUJ Irish Secretary, said: “While there will be an understandable focus on the public sector this is not just about public sector workers and the march is intended for all trade union members and their families.

“Issues of fairness and social justice are at the heart of this campaign and have a direct relevance to all NUJ members, staff and freelance and across all sectors.

“This is a national demonstration and members from throughout the country are encouraged to take part.”

NUJ members are gathering outside the Writer’s Museum on Parnell Square, at 1.45pm and are urged to wear their union badge.

The march will travel along O’Connell Street, D’Olier Street, College Green, Nassau Street, Clare Street and on to Merrion Square.

NUJ Deputy General Secretary Michelle Stanistreet said: "We are proud to have the union banner on Saturday’s demonstration in support of our own campaign against cutbacks in the media and in solidarity with all Irish trades unionists fighting redunancies and pay freezes.

"I hope as many NUJ members as possible will take part."
