MINUTES
Present: Mr J Marino (Vice-President), Mr J Fray, Mr J Mann, Ms J McKnight, Mr G Oakes, Mr P Pendle, Mr T Pye, Mr C Ward and the Secretary.
Apologies for absence were received from Mr D Nicholls (President), Mr J Barnwell, Mr P Booth, Mr P Davies, Ms R Eagleson, Mr B Marshall and Mr J Smith.
Minutes M282.1-M282.10
M283.1 The Minutes of the Meeting held on 18 March 2008 were approved as a true record with the addition in Minute 282.1 that Mr P Pendle also declared an interest as ACM employed a deferred member of the GFTU Pension Scheme.
Research Report
M283.2 The Head of Research Services verbally supplemented a previously circulated written report on the work of the Research Service since October 2007. Particular emphasis was placed on the organising Agenda element of the Strategic Plan. It was agreed to collate recruitment materials. Mr C Ward thanked the Service for a staff training day.
General Secretary Report
M283.3 The General Secretary gave an update on the progress in signing up participating employers to the Actuarial Valuation. It was noted that the Pension Regulator had given six additional weeks to finalise the document.
M283.4 A verbal report on GFTU accommodation after July 2009 was given. Discussions had been held and were ongoing with a number of affiliated Unions.
M283.5 A letter from Mr G Sutcliffe, MP supporting lay member representation of Employment Tribunals and EAT was considered. The General Secretary was directed to support the proposal to maintain lay representation.
Age Discrimination
M283.6 Mr S Pinder (EAD Solicitors) gave a comprehensive account of the current position in respect of the legislation and caselaw pertaining to age discrimination. A number of questions from members were answered and Mr Pinder was thanked for his valuable contribution.
