GFTU ET Secures European Funding for Dispute Resolution Project

The General Federation of Trade Unions (GFTU) Educational Trust has secured funding of approximately £100,000.00 for a one-year European transnational project which will bring together trade union and employer representatives to discuss alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods.
The GFTU is the UK’s trade union centre for small, specialist trade union and professional associations. The ADR project will involve three European partners in France, Bulgaria and Poland each of whom will host round table exercises throughout 2011.
The project will commence in January 2011 with a research phase that will be conducted by Ian Fitzgerald and John Stirling of Northumbria University. This phase will map the European Union (EU) identifying the use of ADR to resolve and settle workplace disputes. In particular the research will identify good practice methods to avoid the use of court settlements in industrial disputes.
Between April and November 2011 four roundtable events in each partner country will examine good practice in ADR and provide trade union and employer representatives with training in conciliation and arbitration. In the context of escalating workplace disputes as a result of the recession, the project aims to aims to improve workplace industrial relations through enhanced social dialogue measures.
Project activity will be co-ordinated by Ian Manborde (GFTU Project Officer) and will draw together trade union and employer representatives in each country under the auspices of the following project partners:
·                     Poland: Solidarnosc NSZZ
·                     Bulgaria: Balkans Institute for Labour & Social Policy (BILSP)
·                     France: Toulouse Business School
