New Website launched at GFTU Conference 2009
This new website was launched at GCM 2009, the GFTU Conference, held in Oxford on May 18 & 19. Conference gave support to the IT & Communications developments of which the website was a key component. Genera Secretary Michael Bradley said "This new site gives us a strong, distinctive and practical internet presence and gives us the capacity to develop as part of the GFTU Strategic Plan over the net few years. It will see a lot of exciting initiatives in the coming months."
Policy motions covering a wide range of subjects were discussed and guest speakers Larry Elliott of the Guardian and Siôn Simon MP Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Further Education) at the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills addressed the delegates.

This GFTU logo was an updated design of the original Walter Crane design, which was made for the new GFTU in 1899. The updated version was produced in 1930-1 when the Federation moved into its own purpose built Central House.
This design was on a plaque on the front of the building and was brought in and restored in 2008 by a specialist metal restorer. The current chain logo was produced in the early 1970s.

Newsquest in Bolton have backed off from imposing compulsory redundancies - after NUJ members refused to take part in the selection process.
The company plans to centralise sub-editing for its Lancashire titles in Blackburn. They have asked for volunteers for redundancy after originally announcing that they planned to axe journalists on the basis of a skills matrix. NUJ members were already angry after the company moved the Bury Times to Bolton a few months ago.
The decision to ship the work on again to Blackburn - with compulsory redundancies was the last straw.
