GFTU SUPPORT REMPLOY BATTLE
GFTU gave its support to the latest stage of the battle to save Remploy factories. Demonstrations in Sheffield, Edinburgh and London made a massive impact as the union fight was stepped up.
Facing massive factory closures - 36 this year and 18 more next year - and 2800 job losses, Remploy workers are fighting back. With support of the unions in Remploy - GMB/UNITE/COMMUNITY - they are stepping up their fight. The closures expose the real nature of the Con/Dem Government who are trying to dress these cuts as some sort of improvement.
The workers are being condemned to the dole queue and some of the disability charities have been conned into an argument about who gets what money as the Government cut rather than joining Remploy workers in a fight to save jobs for those with disabilities with Remploy as one proven option giving long term jobs. The amount to fund Remploy would only be a portion of the bonuses going to various bankers this year. Remploy workers ask do you want a decent society that helps all or are we just looking after the rich?

The GFTU is giving a boost to Workers Memorial Day (April 28) for 2012. Support was given at the GFTU Conference for developing work on WMD. The day is part of a worldwide action to build safety at work organised by trade unions.
This year the concentration in Britain is on the attacks by the Government on health & safety including cuts to national and local enforcement. The TUC has produced a leaflet raising the issues. GFTU unions will be organising workplace and community action for WMD.

GFTU PLAN FOR YOUTH INITIATIVES
The GFTU is targetting youth development for trade unions, A range of initiatives are being developed to ensure the trade union movement is preparing solidly for the future generations of trade unionists.
Following on Conference decisions and detailed Executive discussions the GFTU is drawing up a whole range of initiatives. Two key elements are a special Youth Conference to bring key activists together and plans for a Yiouth Officer at the GFTU to develop work strands. New GFTU General Secretary Doug Nicholls with his long experience in the Community & Youth Workers Union, later as a National Officer for UNITE when CYWU joined UNITE, sees this as a central theme for the GFTU as trade unions face the challemges in the current economic climate.

RUSKIN TOP OUT
Ruskin College has just held its topping out ceremony on the new extension now being built on their Headington Hall site.
It is all change for the college with the new build, due to be completed in September 2012, Headington will become Ruskin’s new home. The move away from Oxford city center to their larger Ruskin Hall/Stoke site in Old Headington comes after the college sold its old site in Walton Street to Oxford University’s Exeter College .
NUJ say Murdoch revelations underline need to examine BBC licence deal again
Evidence that the Conservatives changed broadcasting policy at the prompting of News Corporation’s James Murdoch underlines the need to reassess the current disastrous BBC licence fee deal, the NUJ declared.
NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet (photo above - nujadm) said: .“Reports in the Daily Telegraph show that the Tories abandoned a plan which would ‘top slice’ the BBC licence fee and support other public service broadcasting because James Murdoch didn’t like it. This confirms our warnings about the sinister influence wielded by the Murdochs over government. David Cameron and his colleagues have been shamelessly prioritising the commercial interests of the Murdochs over those of the British public. The shabby deal on the BBC licence fee settlement was done behind closed doors last autumn, with no democratic scrutiny or transparent discussion. It marked a watershed in the BBC’s 89-year history.

GFTU Logo
This GFTU logo was an updated version of the original Walter Crane design, which was made for the new GFTU in 1899. The updated version was produced in 1930-1 when the Federation moved into its own purpose built Central House.
This design was on a plaque on the front of the building and was brought in and restored in 2008 by a specialist metal restorer. The current chain logo was produced in the early 1970s.
